For over 80 years the cities of Glasgow and Sheffield, two of British football’s heartlands, faced each other in challenge matches. The Glasgow team was picked by the Glasgow Football Association, who also oversaw the running of the Glasgow Cup. Glasgow teams would also take on Edinburgh/East of Scotland select sides and a London XI. This photograph shows the Glasgow team which faced Sheffield in 1880 and features the world’s first black international footballer, Scotland’s Andrew Watson (back row, third from the right)
