This photo was taken at the end of two-day meeting in the summer of 1971 that would mark the formation of the National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC). “It is certainly not our purpose to replace or supplement a white male middle class elite with a white female middle class elite,” Bella Abzug asserted during the press conference. The goal of the NWPC was to elevate the number of elected positions held by women to 50%.
