A GOLD BRACELET FOR CHRISTMAS
This bracelet was a gift to Wilhelmina von Hallwyl from her husband on Christmas Eve 1900. Walther von Hallwyl had ordered it from a Turkish goldsmith on Muski Street in Cairo. It is made of sequins and the gold is very soft (23–24 carat).
The lady's companion Ida Uhse describes the Christmas celebrations in her diary:
“24th of Dec. Today we celebrate sacred Christmas Eve far away from Sweden. We have already decorated the Christmas tree for the evening, we have also walked around with the de Marés. Unfortunately it has rained a lot in the last few days. In the evening the Cedercrantzes will come for dinner at the hotel and thereafter we will go up to our rooms in order to dance around the Christmas tree together, in accordance with the Swedish custom. The Count handed out the Christmas presents, I too received a gold Arabic bracelet.”
