Gold medal awarded to Shirley Strickland as a member of the Australian women's 220 x 110 x 110 Yards Relay team at the 1950 British Empire Games - the last year that this alternative distance race was held in these Games. Interestingly, the engraving in the centre of the medal reads, "WOMEN / 440 YARDS RELAY / S. STRICKLAND / AUSTRALIA", as if the distances had been the same as that for the men's race. This medal was one of four won by Strickland at these Games, including a silver in the 100 yards, a silver in the 220 yards, and a gold in the 80 metre hurdles. "BRITISH EMPIRE GAMES / 1950" debossed on obverse, around an image of a helmeted winged lady holding aloft a laurel wreath with her right hand, and a trident held in her left. The reverse features leaves and flowers around the edge, with a small map of New Zealand inside a laurel wreath at the bottom.
