Like gifts, sacrifices may also tell us a great deal about the giver. For instance, the gold hoard of Eberswalde, the most extensive ensemble of gold items ever found in Germany, was clearly left by a person of importance. Rather than necessarily having anything to do with the nature oft he god to whom the sacrifice was being offered, weapons and jewellery might have been offered by warriors and women respectively. As there is no written evidence from continental Europe of the 2nd millennium BC, the meaning must remain a matter of speculation.
