Caravaggio1594/1595

Musei Capitolini

Musei Capitolini
Rome, Italy

It is an early work, created around 1595 as part of Cardina Francesco Maria del Monte's collection. The cardinal was one of the artist's first patrons. The subject of the painting reveals Caravaggio's new interest in scenes taken from the street. Equally new is the presentation of the protagonists, depicted against a clear background, without any indication of environment or depth.
