The most frequent motif of Park Soo-keun's paintings had been daily lives of the poor and lonely folks. Simplified lines, black contours, and granite surfaces, the most unique features of Park's paintings, evoke indigenous sensibility. The elder man and a boy in this painting represent Park's longing for the better future, leaving the past poverty and social depression behind. This painting, also, revealsPark's sincere care and affection toward indigenous Koreans. The minutely considered composition of horizontal and vertical lines, manifested through different positions of the figures in the painting is another factor to make this landmark painting more significant.
