On a fine, sunny Monday morning, John Haggerty Austen -- Alice's grandfather -- pruned the big-leafed Dutchman's Pipe vines that grew over the porch "like a dense grape arbor." Alice captured a moment of his hard work with her camera. In fact, it was John who bought the house in 1844 (Alice's grandmother named it Clear Comfort) and spent two years remodeling it.
