An estate at Great Maytham dates back to the Saxon period. After a succession of owners, it was acquired by Captain James Monypenny in 1714, who built the first recorded house on the site. Much of the house was destroyed by fire in 1893 although the wings survived. These were incorporated into a new house, designed by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and built between 1909 and 1912.
