Grinding stone

Museum of Ontario Archaeology

Museum of Ontario Archaeology
London, Canada

A boulder used to sit below the Lawson site, along the flats by Snake Creek in London, Ontario, likely since a glacier deposited it thousands of years ago. This photograph of it clearly displays the distinctive depressions across its surface, which are similar to those seen on grinding stones found in the village. It’s likely this stone was heavily used to process food, such as grinding corn or nuts into flour, or to prepare clay for making pots.
