Guiscardo's heart

Mino Maccari1967

Palazzo Pretorio e Casa Boccaccio
Certaldo, Italy

The scene alludes to the story of the Prince of Salerno, Tancredi, who, grieved by his daughter's love for a valet, kills him and sends his heart to her in a Gold Cup (Giovanni Boccaccio, 'Decameron', Day IV, novella 1). Mino Maccari is one of the most representative figures in the history of Italian art of the Twentieth Century. Expert in the various painting techniques (watercolour, oil, drawing, etching and linoleography) has the theme of the satire of the costume, among which erotomania and the 'world in ontura'(Longhi). His analysis, of the highest stylistic quality, is acute and biting, but human and vigilantly moralistic.
