The miniature portrait of Gustav Adolf (1594-1632) exhibits the Swedish king almost en face, in a yellow coat and lace collar. Badges such as this, of precious metal with a portrait, and often enamelled and adorned with pearls and expensive stones, were among the most desirable rewards that a regent could give away.
