Gypsy Camp

In this night landscape by Maksymilian Gierymski (1846-1874), on a damp plain dotted here and there with thickets of small trees and bushes, in the foreground, centrally, can be seen a gypsy camp – a makeshift tent and the red-glowing embers of a campfire around which are men, women, and children. Nearby, several horses stand. On the right, a roadside figure of St. John Nepomucene emerges from the twilight. A dark, cloudy sky occupies nearly half the composition, while the horizon is brightened by a smear of pinkish red afterglow. The colour scheme is dark, restricted, favouring olive greens, greys, rusty browns, brightened with reds, yellows, and pinks. Painted with soft touch, loosely.
