Private Lawrence

Private (later Sergeant) Lawrence had recently returned from Lincolnshire to Sheffield to work for Woodhouse and Rixon forging steel. Born in 1895, he was above average height at 5' 8" tall. He is also pictured here at Totley training camp (bottom right), and later on his wedding day. He was courting Lilly when war broke out, but they decided to wait until after the war to marry.

Colonel Francis Revel-Sutton

Colonel Revell-Sutton lived with his wife Lydia, who was 5 years older than him, at Revell Grange, Stannington near Sheffield. He was born in 1871 and had served in the Boer War, during which he was wounded at the battle of Klip River in 1900. He was 43 in 1914. It is said that after the war his batman, Abel Bishop, came and worked for him as a chauffeur. Lydia died in 1926 and Francis in 1953.

Surgeon Major Duncan Gray Newton

Surgeon Major Newton, from the Royal Army Medical Corps, trained as a doctor in Edinburgh and went with the 4th Battalion to France as their medical officer.
