Hallertorbrücke, Rebuilt in 1697, in Front of the City Walls, with the Towers of the Lorenzkirche to the East

Where the Pegnitz exited through the walls, the city had a "leisure space" for less affluent Nurembergers who could not afford a garden of their own. The extensive meadow along the right bank of the Pegnitz, known as the Hallerwiese after its former owners, the patrician von Haller family, also served from 1446 to 1580 as an execution ground where the condemned were drowned in the Pegnitz. The Haller family also gave their name to the "Hallertürlein," a small pedestrian gate leading to the "Neuer Bau" section of town, and the "Hallertorbrücke" bridge.
