(See what was noted for Portrait of Ángel [Fernández] de Soto).

As with the Bent Head of a Woman, 1908, here too the hand (and, of course, the pipe it holds) is enough to suggest to us with almost total certainty, in a surprising visual and sensitive synecdoche, the complete personality of the man to whom it belongs. .

It is significant that Gargallo, whose obsessive perfectionism and tendency to reconsider previous works there is no doubt, as we have already reiterated on different occasions, carried out, as in this case, the separation of Hand of the Elegant, 1921, from the whole La made of lead sheet, a material as unusual and ductile as it is dangerously fragile, which would give rise, however (or perhaps because of it), to negative modeling, perhaps one of Pablo Gargallo's most unique contributions to universal sculpture.
