An influential African American artist, Scott was born in Indiana. He painted murals there and in other states that focused on stories of black achievement and used religious themes. Scott’s world travels influenced his art and perceptions of black people. He showed African Americans as prominent, educated citizens, not just as slaves or laborers. His use of color here shows the influence of postimpressionism on his work.
