President Rutherford B. Hayes' Great Western Tour of 1880 was the first time a sitting U.S. president traveled to the West Coast. Gen. William T. Sherman organized the 71-day journey. First Lady Lucy Webb Hayes and sons Birchard and Rutherford accompanied the president.
