Black lacquered carriage with convertible top; four wheels; drivers seat; two leather upholstered (facing) bench seats. Nearly all wood pieces are accented with white and red paint. Carriage step has small metal ridges to prevent slipping when stepping into vehicle during unfavorable weather conditions. Both doors bear the monograph ʺRBHʺ for 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes.

- Provenance: Barouche landau purchased by 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877 for $1,150 and used by the President during his administration (1877-1881). Loaned to President James Garfield and used during the four months prior to his assassination (1881). According to Lucy Keeler, a cousin of President Hayes, all of the Presidents from Grant to McKinley, as well as generals Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Hancock, Schofield, Miles, and Crook rode in the carriage while guests of President Hayes. This Brewster landau, serial number 1661, later was taken to Fremont, Ohio, and used as the Hayes family carriage.
