Haystacks

The work Haystacks should be situated among the countless watercolors, drawings and oil paintings he produced with views of the cities and landscapes that he toured on his trip to Europe.
This drawing with applied watercolor appears to be a rapid sketch done on site, in front of the model. The pencil lines construct the forms of the haystacks and the road that extends toward the horizon with great economy of means. The color marks areas of light and shadow that accompany the graphite lines. The palette of complementary colors inherited from Impressionism is present in the yellows in the light and the violets in the shadows. The artist’s personality is projected in this landscape of perfect solitude and abandon.
