Huesca, Spain

This head, from an urban archeological site in the city of Huesca, represents the head of a man, or a gorgon, according to other interpretations. The position of the mouth suggests this was most likely from a fountain. It dates from the 1st century BCE to the 1st century CE. Its most interesting features are the positioning of the well-defined, almond-shaped eyes; the ears; the flat, wide nose; the definition of the hair in waves; and the opening through the mouth, where the water would have poured out.
