"This small head may be a fragment of a larger portrait group by Fuller, or perhaps an intimate sketch depicting one of his children.

A Royalist, Fuller lived in Paris where he trained as an artist in the late 1640s. He was then back in England by 1650 and worked as a scene painter, in which capacity he probably came into contact with William Cartwright, who bequeathed his collection to Dulwich College in 1686."
