Abstract in style, Budja masks represent a mythical being that may be a water spirit in the Zaire River or a wild animal in the bush.
These headdresses were used in agrarian ceremonies and hunting rituals. In the 1980s, then Zairian president Mobutu Sese Seko organized a performance of Budja masked dancers in honor of the King of Belgium. This mask was worn at that performance.
