A Sikorsky UH-34D helicopter flight crew from Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron (Light) 262 used this rescue harness sling and a crook to recover Alan B. Shephard after his Freedom 7 spacecraft landed in the Atlantic Ocean on 5 May 1961.
The rescue sling is on loan to the National Museum of the Marine Corps (NMMC) from National Air and Space Administration. It is included in the Spaceflight: The Marine Astronauts exhibition on display at NMMC through January 2024.
