This is a nest for a hen to lay or hatch eggs. It is made with straw and sometimes hung under the eaves or from the corners of the eaves. Although its shape is not fixed, it is commonly made in the shape of a reversed roof-ridge cover, and then it can be hung by binding the ends of the hencoop with two to four straw ropes. Some hencoops are made in the shape of a basket and then hung. These hencoops are open with no cover or side walls. As such, they were made with a concave base with the edges were lifted upward, which accommodates the hen comfortably. Meanwhile, some hencoops were made similar to an egg net bag and used to confine chicks for protection as well as for laying or brooding eggs.
