Born on September 1, 1839, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Henry S. Safford was in charge of the War Department’s Property Returns Division. He offered up the Petersen Boarding House as a place to bring President Lincoln. After the war and Lincoln’s death, Safford moved to New York City to work for the Erie Railroad Company and as a travel agent in Springfield. He died on February 17, 1917.
