In the northern Western Ghats of Maharashtra, high altitude lateritic plateaus are found between 800m to 1400m, while low altitude plateaus are found between 50m to 200m in Kokan belt. High altitude plateaus play an important role in recharging ground water by absorbing rainwater and slowly releasing it to the strems and other outlets. Famous examples of these are Mahabaleshwar, Pachgani and Kas plateaus.
