A photograph of the complement of HMA Submarine AE2, the RAN vessel behind one of the least known naval stories from the Gallipoli campaign of World War I. AE2 was the first submarine to penetrate the Dardanelles Strait and from 25 April to 30 April 1915, played a hectic game of cat and mouse with Turkish forces, causing confusion and raising alarm that delayed Turkish reinforcements across the straits.

- Significance: This postcard offers a rare view of the men of HMAS AE2 - attached to the British squadron campaign in Gallipoli during World War I. Dublin-born commanding officer Henry Hugh Gordon Dacre Stoker was appointed commanding officer of AE2 in 1913 and the crew was a mix of Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy. Having successfully penetrated the Dardanelles, AE2 was sunk north of Marmara Island and the crew captured. Their success stands as one of the RAN's great deeds of WWI.
