Horn

19th century

Cincinnati Art Museum

Cincinnati Art Museum
Cincinnati, United States

The maker of this horn shaped it from a tusk and decorated it with incised geometric patterns and a carved human face just above the tip. Performers blow through the hole cut into the side of the horn—note the lozenge-shaped mouthpiece on this example—rather into the narrow end of the horn. They play this type of horn alone or in concert with other instruments.
