Early buffalo lived in Sangiran from Early Pleistocene to the Last Pleistocene era. This fauna was characterized by a pair of permanent, hollow horns that expanded to the side and could reach up to 1.5 meters in length. These horns grew not long after birth until its death. Early buffalo lived in transitional environments such as the savanna, tall grass, and swamps. They wallowed in mud holes and swamps, coexisting with early bulls. Unlike the early buffalo, the early bull had rounded horns that curved upwards. Antelope was an endemic animal that looked similar to a goat. There were two types of Sangiran antelope: Duboisia santeng and Epileptobos groenoveldtii. Duboisia had shorter horns than Epileptobos.
