In Crocetti’s compositions that portray this ancient iconographic theme, the correlation between man and animal is quite evident, not much by the synchronicity of the movements but in a certain similarity which is almost physiognomic, as if the gait could have been able to modify the appearance of one into the other.
In this model, the knight’s gaunt limbs seem to fuse with the equally skinny animal’s torso. The movement of both subjects is tired, the man tries to spur the animal but without a real effort. The obedience of the horse is just hinted in the front leg which is barely above the ground but his tired head seems to be heavier than its will, aspect that is visible in the torsion of the neck that however keeps its grace.
