"Circus and acrobatics were popular
outdoor entertainments in Japan. Here we
see two circus entertainers from Osaka
demonstrating stunts on horses.
The inscriptions say the men have
‘come up from Osaka’, probably to Edo
(Tokyo) to perform. ‘Kamo’ in the title
may refer to the Kamo river area in
the former capital, Kyoto, where many
entertainments took place."
