The lands at Howsham belonged to Kirkham Abbey until the Dissolution. In 1573 the manor was bought by Thomas Bamburgh and did not change hands by sale again until 1948. In the early 18th century the house, Howsham Hall, was remodelled and a series of formal gardens laid out. Further remodelling of the house and grounds took place later in the 18th century. Lancelot 'Capability' Brown was consulted and probably provided plans for landscape improvements.
