Called steatite katashiro, these are ritual objects: figures of people, boats and horses, carved out of soft steatite. These became the main type of offering at Okinoshima rituals after the 8th century. Of those carved, human-shaped figures seen from the front were originally the most important of the offerings made to the god of the sea.
