The construction of Hwaseong Fortress was planned in 1789 (the 13th year of the reign of King Jeongjo) when the tomb of the king’s father, Crown Prince Sado (also known as Prince Jangheon), was relocated from Baebongsan Mountain in Yangju to Hwasan Mountain in Suwon. The work was started in February 1794 and completed in September 1796. The fortress has a circumference of 5,520 meters.
