Place d'Armes, commonly known at the time of this photo as "French Square," was enlivened during the winter carnival of 1887 by an attraction of British inspiration: an ice maze. Henderson's composition pleasingly combines the three registers formed by the large trees in the foreground, the maze, and the basilica of Notre-Dame and the Sulpician seminary at the rear.
