The Ictíneo I was the first known submarine built by Narciso Monturiol, a native of Barcelona, between 1858 and 1859. It was 7 m long, 2.5 m wide and 3.5 m deep. Its initial purpose was to facilitate coral fishing. The name Ictíneo was the result of combining the ancient Greek words ichtus (fish) and naus (ship). A replica can be visited at the Barcelona Maritime Museum.
