Seoul, South Korea

Lee Bul’s Idea Sketch for REAL DMZ PROJECT is a sketch for a piece that was conceived by employing the forms of structures that were installed in the DMZ but are no longer used for their original purpose. Idea Sketch No. 2 for REAL DMZ PROJECT – Infinity Type B utilizes a watchtower-type bunker that is located near the entrance of Soyisan. It is a work in which mirror fragments in multi-angle cuts are pasted on inside the bunker so that the northern scenery of the watchtower is simultaneously reflected from various angles, showing a fragmented surrounding view that is dependent on external changes like the seasons and weather.

Exploring issues ranging from societal gender roles and the failure of idealism to the relationship between humanity and technology, she produces genre-bending works rooted in critical theory, art history and themes from science fiction. Lee Bul was academically trained in sculpture but her interest expanded into other media, such as performance art. Through her mesmerizing installations, she investigates how visionary narratives and notions of progress affect the way our world is structured both in the present and future. Her most recent survey exhibition was displayed at Hayward Gallery, London (2018), and Gropius Bau, Berlin (2018–2019). She currently lives and works in Seoul.
