The crypt of the church dates from the 8th century and is the burial place of two Mercian Kings. The village of Repton, in the south of the county of Derbyshire, was once the capital of the Kingdom of Mercia in the 7th century and the church (the first Christian church built in the Midlands), was named after St Wystan, a Mercian prince who was murdered by his brother. The crypt where his body once lay, is one of the most important Saxon examples in the country.
