Kawamura Jakuishi (1638-1707), the painter of this hanging scroll, was bone in the Hizen province. He entered the priesthood and moved to Nagasaki to study painting under Itsunen (1601-68), one of the earliest Obaku painter in this port town. Jakushi made various figure paintings and amplify the strong expression that the master had so as to turn it more eccentric. In this painting, 16 hermits gather and excitedly watch Jurojin ( the god of longevity) flying with his crane.
