The idea to build a permanent Empire museum and exhibition in London originated in the 1870s. A building was eventually constructed between 1887 and 1893, built to designs by Thomas E Collcott. Parts of the Institute were demolished in the 1950s for the expansion of Imperial College. The only surviving element is the Queen's Tower.
