The fitted rectangular writing set and cover have a beveled ridge and a tin-reinforced rim. The entire surface of the box and cover is coated with black lacquer. On the surface of the cover, a chilly autumn scene of Mt. Ogura is depicted with the combination of raised maki-e and togidashi-maki-e techniques with a sprinkling of blush gold. On the inside of the cover, a scene from Sumiyoshi Shrine is depicted using the same techniques. The inside of the box has a nashi-ji (pearskin finish) on which the scenery of the Tatsuta River is rendered with togidashi-maki-e, tsukegaki, and kakiwari (dividing line) techniques. It is presumed that this writing set was made by a craftsman of the Igarashi school, a school famous for maki-e in the Muromachi period.
