In Memoriam

Evelyn De Morgan1890/1919

De Morgan Collection

"In this painting a solitary female figure is seated in a mournful posture on a stone bench which is reminiscent of a funerary monument. In her hand, she holds a wreath of flowers, presumably meant for the deceased.

The painting is undated but thought to have been completed circa 1900 and was a reflection of Evelyn's views on the futility of war. The sentiment in the painting is one of inconsolable loss and remembrance rather than pride in the deeds of a heroic warrior. However, the rising sun in the background of the painting is also an expression of hope and a reflection of Evelyn’s belief in the afterlife and renewal."
