Self-caricature of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro relating to his stay in the ‘Lazaretto’ where he was forced to remain in quarantine because of the danger of the spread of yellow fever, on his return from Brazil, in 1879. Published in 1881, with texts and illustrations by the artist, the work In the Lisbon Lazaretto tells with superb caricatures the adventures of his stay in Brazil and his nostalgic recollections of Lisbon. The amusing self-portrait was created for the cover of this publication.
