"In the Mountains" poem by Maria Konopnicka

Published in issue 30 of 22 July 1876, the poem "W górach" ["In the Mountains"] was Maria Konopnicka's first text that appeared in "Tygodnik Illustrowany" magazine. The full title of the periodical was "Illustrated Weekly Magazine: A periodical covering the most important contemporary events, biographies of distinguished people, domestic monuments and souvenirs, travels, novels and poems, reports on fine arts, writing, natural sciences, agriculture, industry and inventions, essays on customs and humanities, folk types, clothing and costumes, archaeology, etc.", and its editor-in-chief was Ludwik Jenike. The poem received a favourable review from Henryk Sienkiewicz, which made the poetess believe in her literary abilities. Thus, she decided to leave her husband together with her children and to earn a living on her own as a teacher and writer.
