18e siècle

Musée des Confluences

Musée des Confluences
Lyon, France

In order to make sense of time mankind has always observed his surroundings and in particular the movement of celestial bodies. Then humanity acquired more and more accurate measuring instruments. The 19th century brought a multiplication of global exchanges and it was deemed necessary to share a common time which has since become universal.

Weights are attached to threads suspended from an incense stick. When the stick burns the threads release the weights which fall and mark the time elapsed.
