Called the father of the Taos art colony, the Cincinnati-born Sharp studied at the McMicken School of Design (later called the Cincinnati Art Academy), and in Belgium, Germany, and France. He began summering in Taos in 1897 and began painting American Indian portraits on the northern Plains about 1900. Purchased funded by Beulah Lee Rutherford Carter
