Infant Jesus in canopy bed

This type of votive object usually formed part of a bride’s dowry and was related to the natural desire for God to bless the union with offspring. While the bed is neither particularly old, nor especially Indian, the workmanship has certain features and finishing touches that suggest its origin. A good example of this is the pearl motif used on all the various parts of this delicate example of the jeweller’s art.
This miniature Infant Jesus, made of polychrome and gilt ivory, rests on a small silver bed, idealized not through simplification but by the canopied framework, supported by a valance also made of silver. Four crossbars support a closed crown at the top of the canopy; the posts go down to form the legs and feet of the bed, which end in flattened balls. The sides, head and foot of the bed are formed by a pierced screen that protects the mattress on which the child lies. The legs, all identical support the cradle, which could also be tilted. As a shelter for the sleeping child, the bed generally includes a mattress and pillow of embroidered silk on which the figure of the child stands out, not just for the naturalistic pose – sucking his finger – but also for the richness of his gold adornments. Like any wealthy Indian child, he wears a necklace of precious stones as well as a belt hung with jewels, bracelets and anklets. These adornments show the esteem in which the Infant was held.
