Ingot-shaped pillow with black calligraphy

Wangye Museum
Shenzhen, China

This is a pillow from the Song dynasty. The couplet reads: Making paper and playing the zither, Burning incense and reading scholarly texts. The style of the calligraphy seems to be influenced by the style of Emperor Huizong. The characters are thin and upright, and hooked strokes are elongated. The transitions and strokes are powerful. The removal of hooks from horizontal strokes and addition of dots to vertical strokes is unique, but otherwise the characters generally retain the features of slender gold script. The calligraphy style is reminiscent of Emperor Huizong.
