Initial Cooling Experiment (ICE) ICE: l'anneau-test pour le refroidissement de faisceaux

Photo No. 99.2.78 In 1977, in a record-time of 9 months, the magnets of the g-2 experiment were modified and used to build a proton/antiproton storage ring: the "Initial Cooling Experiment" (ICE). It served for the verification of the cooling methods to be used for the "Antiproton Project". Stochastic cooling was proven the same year, electron cooling followed later. Also, with ICE the experimental lower limit for the antiproton lifetime was raised by 9 orders of magnitude: from 2 microseconds to 32 hours. En 1977, en un temps record de 9 mois, les aimants de l'expérience g-2 ont été modifiés pour en construire un anneau de stockage pour protons et antprotons. Son but était la vérification des méthodes de refroidissement à être utilisées pour le "Projet Antiprotons". En plus, avec ICE la limite inférieure expérimentale du temps de vie de l'antiproton a été améliorée de 9 ordres de grandeur: de 2 microsecondes à 32 heures.
